Description
Spirit is defined in religion and philosophy as the immaterial side or essence of human existence and is often treated as synonymous with individuality. In theology, the spirit is defined as the part of the person that participates in divinity and is generally considered as the part of the body that continues to exist after the death of the person. Many cultures have identified the intangible source of human life or existence with the spirit, and many cultures have based all living things on spirits. Even in prehistoric peoples, a distinction is made between the body and what makes it alive. In many religious and philosophical movements, a purposeful premise or force, which is an element of every living thing, does not need physical matter for its existence, is non-material, imperceptible, manifests itself in its manifestations, transcendent, capable of living, changing and developing. The spirit is considered in many religious and philosophical movements as an eternal, possessing talent, the engine of human behavior, a being, or the hidden face of the being that has the will to commit good deeds with a fault.
However, it is seen that the concept of spirit varies widely from culture to culture, religion to religion, philosophy to philosophy. Various religions and philosophers have put forward many theories with their different views on the nature of the spirit, its relationship with the body, its origin, and whether it is mortal or not. In many religious and philosophical traditions, it is accepted that the spirit is a unique being that contains the inner essence of every living being and that the basic element of man - rather than the brain or any other part of his organism - is the spirit. On the other hand, in some other religions and philosophies, it is accepted that the spirit has a material element that will act as a mediator between the body and itself. Although there is no distinction made between the concepts of spirit in some cultures, religions, and philosophies, and some distinctions are made, and there are two or more terms denoting these concepts, these terms have often been used interchangeably to indicate the same concept.
