NEW LIGHT RAIL TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY IN MAURITIUS
The island of Mauritius, slightly larger than Greater London, lies some 2000 km east of the African continent (900 km east of Madagascar) in the Indian Ocean (pop. 1.3 million).
Construction on a 26 km light rail line from the capital Port-Louis (150,000 inh.) via Rose Hill to Curepipe started in 2017, to open in stages by 2021.
- 19 stations: 17 at-grade and two elevated
- 18 low-floor Urbos 100 trams provided by CAF (45.4 m long, 2.65 m wide)
10 Jan 2020: Port Louis Victoria – Rose Hill (12.6 km) in commercial service as of after several months of testing with selected passengers; with an extension to Aapravasi Ghat still pending
20 June 2021: Rose Hill – Quatre Bornes (2.6 km)
08 May 2022: Quatre Bornes – Phoenix (3.6 km)
10 Oct 2022: Phoenix – Curepipe Central (6.9 km)
