Rogue with the Dead – developed by room6 is an idle-clicker RPG that combines power-up elements in an infinite loop. No progression is too extreme, and no damage is too fatal.

Let’s climb the infinite ladder of progression in our complete walkthrough, and beginner guide below:

Getting Started: Overcoming The Tutorial

As soon as you load in, the game gives you the option of choosing your preferred art style. My preferences tend to skew more towards the cute anime-esque theme, but if you’re more of a pixel connoisseur, then you know what to pick!

From there, our now-selected mascot Elly greets us, and begins explaining how everything works and functions.

It seems that our objective for this game is to exterminate the Demon Lord located nearby. Let’s first use the funds to strengthen our attack.

For this, head to troops, and tap on the Hire button to initiate the Gacha system and get a hero.

Preparing the Attack!

Now that we’ve hired our first soldier, it’s time to follow their movements, and watch them generate gold for us. These units are autonomous, so we don’t really need to do anything other than to watch them make money!

Let’s try to do a few quests to grab an overall feel of the game! Head to Quests and tap on the first one to begin. You can also choose to power up your soldiers to ensure victory – though, that’ll cost a pretty penny.

The Naga Serpent: Battle of the Ancient

It’s time to face our first big enemy. There’s a Naga Serpent located at the 30 Mile mark, let’s go there, and defeat it, but first, we need to level up our soldiers to be capable of defeating it.

For that, let’s start by rolling more, and investing the gold in our soldiers! It seems we were not strong enough to take it down. No worries, that’s what this guide is for!

Understanding The Game: Economy

First things first, the main way of progressing in Rogue with the Dead is via gold. The more you have of it, the better, but the more you spend of it, the best.

Everything is linked to gold. Now of course, there are other elements as well. However, the most basic form of progression is only achievable via gold. Think of crystals and diamonds as a way to make gold generation easier, nothing more nothing less.

Upon starting out, there will be two major ways of getting gold. Any enemy your units or you kill will drop gold. Additionally, you can also obtain gold by doing quests.

Let’s take a deeper dive into both of those methods:

Doing Quests: Your Early Game Friend

The easiest way of obtaining gold is through quests, hands down. You will be getting chunks of solid gold after every couple of seconds as long as you keep pressing that start button.

Now, there is a pay-to-win method of spending crystals to automate this, but it’s not really recommended, as the game works in Campaign models, and once you fail a campaign most of such things will reset.

That said, you just need to keep upgrading quests, attempting quests, and gaining gold. However, there’s a very fine line of balance here.

Progression: Nothing is Stale

The more miles you cover, the better quests you will unlock, and the more time they will take to complete. You don’t want to be over-spending on your quests such that the yield is worse than the investment.

Try to upgrade your quests till level 20 (tentative), and hop on the better ones as they unlock. Do remember that your first bottleneck will occur around mile 100 or so. Therefore, you’d want to be speedrunning your first campaign to reach that mark.

From there, it’s a sequence of rinse-and-repeat, unlock better units, upgrade them, and keeping everything competitive.

Is Questing Your Go-To? Not Forever!

Surprised? Yes, questing gives a disgustingly good amount of gold. However, the time taken for each quest will increase the deeper you progress, and at one point, it will feel stale.

You’d have nothing to do than to stare your screen, waiting for the time when that paycheck of gold drops into your drought-stricken pocket.

In order to constantly generate gold, your main source of income will always be monster hunting during the campaign.

However, you shouldn’t let go of quests either, take both forms along with you to ensure you’re not missing out on anything.

Killing Monsters: Maximizing Profits

I’ve mentioned how killing monsters drop gold. While this doesn’t do much for your early game progression, it’s sort of that guaranteed income that you’d be getting no matter what.

Quest Level up Rogue With The Dead

Since most of the elements in Rogue with the Dead are autonomous, you will either be making bank, or losing your campaigns in the most dreadful fashion possible. There are no in-betweens.

Therefore, in order to not only survive, but make the most bank, invest in your soldiers, spells, and anything else that can give you that little edge in your battle against the horde.

Your First Campaign Is Not Your Last

It goes without saying, but the game is designed in such a way that no matter how well your first run goes, you won’t be reaching and defeating the Demon King, unless you’ve got lots and lots of disposable income in your hands.

No worries though, you’re not supposed to be focusing on that. Instead, use your first run to cope a feel of the mechanics and the tools you have at your disposal. I’ve already stressed how important leveling troops is.

However, the same doesn’t go for something like damaging spells, especially in the mid to late game since most of them will be one-time use, dealing little to no damage.

Best Way of Using Spells?

It’s simple, don’t use them unless you have to, and that moment only comes when death is knocking at your door. Instead, level up your tap damage. It’s practically cooldown-less, and can scale up to absurd levels of damage.

However, keep a low-cooldown yet AoE spell like the Fireball in your arsenal as well in case you accidentally let a strong enemy wave stack that you would’ve killed otherwise.

Sure, temporary enhancement spells can give you that edge in battle, but that also means your team is underspec’d, and you’d be in serious trouble as soon as the effect wears off.

Besides, a stacked enemy wave will one-shot your units, so they won’t get the opportunity to unleash their buffed damage anyways. As far as the financial spell goes, consider it more of a powerfarming scenario where you’re squeezing every last drop.

General Tips to Get You Going

Here are some general points you need to keep in mind in order to enjoy the game while progressing:

  1. Master the Art of Gacha: The Gacha system is where you get your heroes. Understanding the odds and knowing when to roll can make a significant difference in your team’s strength. Remember, the right hero can turn the tide of battle.
  2. Strategic Soldier Deployment: Each soldier has unique abilities and strengths. Understanding these and deploying your soldiers strategically can give you an edge in battles. For instance, some soldiers might be better at dealing with certain types of enemies.
  3. Utilize the Power of Synergy: Some soldiers and spells work better together due to their synergistic abilities. Identifying these combinations and using them effectively can significantly enhance your combat effectiveness.
  4. Understand Your Enemies: Just as your soldiers have unique abilities, so do your enemies. Understanding their strengths and weaknesses can help you strategize better and defeat them more efficiently.
  5. Optimize Your Spell Usage: Some spells can be game-changers, but they need to be used wisely. Understanding the optimal time and situation to use each spell can make a significant difference in your battles.
  6. Plan Your Campaigns: Each campaign is a new opportunity to progress. Planning your campaigns, setting goals, and strategizing on how to achieve them can help you progress more efficiently.
  7. Invest in the Right Upgrades: As you progress, you’ll unlock various upgrades. Not all upgrades are created equal, and investing in the right ones can make a significant difference in your progression.
  8. Take Advantage of the Game Mechanics: “Rogue with the Dead” has various game mechanics like the Campaign model and autonomous elements. Understanding these mechanics and using them to your advantage can help you progress faster.
  9. Experiment and Learn: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different strategies and setups. Sometimes, the best way to learn is through trial and error.
  10. Stay Patient and Persistent: Progress in “Rogue with the Dead” can sometimes be slow, especially in the later stages. Stay patient, keep strategizing, and don’t lose hope. Persistence is key in this game.

Trial and Error: The Learning Curve

“Rogue with the Dead” is a game that is easy to pick up but can become quite challenging as you progress. The game’s mechanics are simple to understand, and the early stages provide a smooth learning curve.

However, as you take a nosedive into the deeper stages of the game, you will find that the gold generation time increases significantly. This can slow down your progress to the point where you might have to wait days to make any substantial advancement.

This is where the game’s trial and error aspect comes into play. It’s all about finding the right balance between spending and saving, between questing and monster hunting, and between upgrading your soldiers and spells.

You might find yourself experimenting with different strategies, trying out different combinations of soldiers and spells, and adjusting your approach based on the results.

Utilizing Ads for Perks

One of the ways the game helps you navigate this challenging progression curve is through the use of ads. Watching ads can provide you with various perks that can help speed up your progress.

These perks can range from increasing your gold generation rate to boosting your soldiers’ combat effectiveness.

While it might be tempting to skip the ads, they can be a valuable tool in your arsenal, especially when you’re facing a progression bottleneck.

Strategic Gameplay Over Perks

However, it’s important to remember that these perks are not a substitute for strategic gameplay.

They are tools that can help you, but ultimately, your progress in the game will depend on your understanding of the game mechanics, your strategic decisions, and your persistence.

Learning from Failure

In “Rogue with the Dead”, every failure is an opportunity to learn and improve. So, don’t be disheartened if you find yourself stuck at a certain point in the game.

Experiment with different strategies, learn from your mistakes, and keep pushing forward. With patience and persistence, you will overcome the challenges and keep climbing the ladder of progression.

Defeated the Demon King: Now What?

The campaign isn’t over yet, you can still recontinue the journey and live through all those perils once again, or you can check out the new events section that was previously locked.

There’s truly not much to do at this point, unless you’re ok with redundancy. Try to obtain a high-score in event, level up your units to oblivion, and keep grinding until you grow out of Rogue with the Dead.

That said, defeating the Demon King is a feat in itself, so you’re already ahead of 99% of the gamers. Reaching this point wouldn’t have been easy.

There’s only one thing left to do now: try to aim for a speedrun to break past that 1% barrier, and become the greatest ever to touch Rogue with the Dead!

Conclusion

In essence, Rogue with the Dead is an addictive IDLE RPG that, as the title implies, goes stale after a while. However, in order to ensure that point doesn’t come earlier than expected, you need to lay down the groundwork ahead of time.
