Developed by Asantee Games, Magic Rampage is an enjoyable, fast-paced 2D platformer that’s playable on PC, Android, and iOS mobile devices. Taking cues from other successful Metroidvania-style games, Magic Rampage succeeds in preserving the charm of the genre while making it streamlined for casual players to get into.

Although the game’s presentation, story adventure, and side-scrolling gameplay are all easy to grasp, things escalate quickly past Chapter 1. With puzzles becoming trickier, enemies beefier, and secret areas more hidden, the latter stages can be quite difficult to complete. To help you out, here’s a quick walkthrough and beginner’s guide, to aid you in your new adventure:

The Premise

After an evil Warlock invaded the King’s castle, various nightmarish fiends have now made the kingdom their sanctuary. After infiltrating the place following your unknown Master’s bidding, it’s up to you to defeat all manners of nightmares that stand in your way, finding out the truth behind the unprovoked attack on the palace.

Magic Rampage’s action starts immediately after the introductory ‘cut scene’, and beforehand, you’ll get the chance to pick your character class (each benefitting from different stats) and customize their looks however you want. Be a sword-throwing Ranger or a powerful Black Mage, the choice is entirely yours!

Challenging 2D Platformer

Adopting a cartoonish art style, Magic Rampage proves that video games aren’t just about jaw-dropping graphics. Creative level designs and end-game replayability are among the most important aspects too, and Asantee Games has done its job wonderfully here.

As a side-scrolling platformer, the game is all about jumping onto different objects to progress to the next stage, avoiding/ defeating enemies along the way. To promote variety, the game has multiple different game modes for you to test yourself in:

  • Story Dungeons (divided into Chapters)
  • Weekly Dungeons
  • Competitive Dungeons
  • Survival

Story Dungeons

Photo: Asantee Games

In terms of the storyline, there are five Chapters in total, each having up to six Dungeons for you to clear. This is the best place for you to train yourself because the Story Dungeons’ difficulty isn’t as punishing as the others, letting you familiarise yourself with the game’s mechanics.

Weekly Dungeons

Weekly Dungeons are special levels that rotate every week, and they’re like an extension of the Story Dungeon albeit slightly tougher to complete. Still, your character ranks up in this mode, and the rewards for defeating Weekly Dungeons are quite impressive, becoming more special as your rank increases.

Competitive Dungeons

Photo: Anastee Games

Competitive Dungeons is the game’s multiplayer component; you compete against another player’s stage-clearing record to see who bests the other. If you’ve beaten the Story and Weekly Dungeons many times over, it might be time for you to compare your skills with other players around the world as well.

Survival

Finally, Survival mode is where you continuously fend off waves of enemies spawning on the screen, accumulating kills while you stay alive for as long as possible. There are six unique Dungeons available for you to play in Survival, but you’ll need to achieve a certain number of kills for each map to unlock the next one.

Distinct Character Classes

Photo: Asantee Games

To promote role-playing elements into the game, Magic Rampage offers thirteen different classes for you to choose from, each benefitting from various in-game advantages that correspond with their specialties/ vocation.

Your character class options are:

  • Ranger
  • Druid
  • Mage
  • Rogue
  • Black Mage
  • Priest
  • Warlock
  • Thief
  • Paladin
  • Warrior
  • Elite Warrior (Special)
  • High Mage (Special)
  • Witchdoctor (Special)

Ranger

Photo: Asantee Games

The most standard class is arguably the Ranger, proficient at throwing Swords, Axes, and Spears. Considering you’ll come across many of these during the early game, this class is viable for all game modes.

  • +25% Sword Attack Power
  • +25% Axe Attack Power
  • +25% Spear Attack Power
  • +20% Armour
  • +5% Jump Impulse (jumping height)

Signature power:

  • Sword Rampage
    • Everything around you moves slowly, and Sword Attack Power is further increased, besides the ability to triple-jump too.

Druid

Photo: Asantee Games

A pseudo-elemental class, the Druid works well with Staves and Spears, with a major boost to magical prowess too. Your signature move is also strengthened when you wear Earth or Water weapon/ armor.

  • +30% Magic Power
  • +30% Spear Attack Power
  • +20% Staff Attack Power
  • +6% Jump Impulse
  • +3% Speed

Signature power:

  • Spider Minion
    • Summons a Spider to aid you temporarily. It becomes stronger if you’re wearing Earth or Water equipment.

Mage

Photo: Asantee Games

As its name suggests, the Mage is a powerful sorcerer, and enjoys somewhat similar boons as the Druid, except for a few minor differences (notably its weak Hammer mastery). This class favors the Fire element most.

  • +30% Magic Power
  • +30% Staff Attack Power
  • +20% Axe Attack Power
  • +4% Jump Impulse
  • +2% Speed
  • -30% Hammer Attack Power

Signature power:

  • Fire Rampage
    • Shoots fireballs everywhere. Fire-type gear that you wear increases their potency.

Rogue

Photo: Asantee Games

The Rogue is just a Dagger-crazy Ranger in disguise. Instead of Swords, the Rogue deals extreme amounts of damage when throwing Daggers instead of other weapons.

  • +45% Dagger Attack Power
  • +6% Speed
  • +5% Jump Impulse
  • -30% Axe Attack Power
  • -30% Hammer Attack Power

Special power:

  • Dagger Rampage
    • Everything around you is slowed down, and Dagger Attack Power is boosted further, besides the ability to jump three times in a row.

Black Mage

Photo: Asantee Games

Just like the Mage, the Black Mage is a mighty magic-wielder as well. However, the class is more attuned to weapons/ armor that is imbued with the Dark element.

  • +30% Magic Power
  • +30% Staff Attack Power
  • +20% Dagger Attack Power
  • +4% Speed
  • +2% Jump Impulse
  • -30% Hammer Attack Power

Special power:

  • Dark Rampage
    • Summons Dark orbs that attack enemies nearby. Wearing a Dark-type weapon/ armor increases their damage potential.

Priest

Photo: Asantee Games

The Priest is probably the least favored class among the others due to its ‘passiveness’, only being slightly tankier than usual. Still, it’s a great choice for seasoned players to add an extra layer of challenge to their playthroughs.

  • +20% Magic Power
  • +20% Staff Attack Power
  • +20% Armour
  • +4% Jump Impulse
  • +3% Speed
  • -30% Dagger Attack Power

Special power:

  • Starlight
    • You become immune to all enemy damages. Everything around you moves slowly as well, and Light weapons’ damage is improved. Wearing Light-type gear increases the duration of the invulnerability state.

Warlock

Photo: Asantee Games

The Warlock might be one of the best classes in Magic Rampage. They are all the ‘offensive’ classes (Ranger, Rogue, Warrior, etc.) combined into one.

  • +40% Spear Attack Power
  • +30% Magic Power
  • +25% Sword Attack Power
  • +20% Dagger Attack Power
  • +20% Axe Attack Power
  • +4% Speed

Special power:

  • Dark Clone
    • A clone of yourself is summoned to fight alongside you temporarily, mimicking some of your moves.

Thief

Photo: Asantee Games

The Thief is a good weapon-wielding class that benefits most from Air and Dark elements. The class offers the highest jumping passive too, letting you reach elevated platforms easier.

  • +30% Dagger Attack Power
  • +30% Hammer Attack Power
  • +20% Sword Attack Power
  • +7% Jump Impulse
  • +6% Speed
  • -30% Staff Attack Power

Special power:

  • Rage Leap
    • You jump upwards, dealing area-of-effect (AOE) damage to nearby enemies caught inside its zone, all while everything on screen is slowed. Air or Dark gear that you wear makes the zone bigger.

Paladin

Photo: Asantee Games

A guardian of justice, the Paladin’s boons aren’t as compelling as the others, but you can be quite versatile with your weapon rotations and armor when opting for this class.

  • +20% Magic Power
  • +20% Sword Attack Power
  • +20% Axe Attack Power
  • +20% Hammer Attack Power
  • +20% Armour

Special power:

  • Hammer of Justice
    • You throw magic Hammers everywhere, becoming invulnerable too. Light and Air equipment worn increases the magic Hammers’ damage, while your basic Hammer equipped receives its own damage buff as well.

Warrior

Photo: Asantee Games

Simply put, the Warrior is the stereotypical brawler. You’ll gain supreme damage bonuses to Swords, Axes, and Hammers, all while receiving extra armor.

  • +30% Sword Attack Power
  • +30% Axe Attack Power
  • +30% Hammer Attack Power
  • +30% Armour
  • -40% Staff Attack Power

Special power:

  • Shield Blast
    • Grants shields that block incoming attacks. Nearby enemies are dealt AOE damage when the skill is cast, and your armor and speed are significantly improved.

Special Classes

Elite Warrior

Photo: Asantee Games

Funnily enough, the Elite Warrior is an advanced version of the Warrior itself. The drawback is that this class will cost 180,000 in-game gold to be unlocked.

  • +35% Sword Attack Power
  • +35% Axe Attack Power
  • +35% Hammer Attack Power
  • +40% Armour
  • +5% Jump Impulse
  • -40% Staff Attack Power

Special power:

  • Shield Blast
    • Works the same as the Warrior’s; grants protective shields, deals AOE damage, armor and speed bolstered. However, the higher your armor value is, the stronger the AOE damage does.

High Mage

Photo: Asantee Games

A combination of the Mage and Black Mage, you become deadlier when wielding Staves. You will need 180,000 gold to unlock this class too.

  • +35% Magic Power
  • +30% Staff Attack Power
  • +20% Sword Attack Power
  • +6% Speed
  • +4% Jump Impulse
  • -30% Hammer Attack Power

Special power:

  • Magic Rampage
    • Conjures balls of flame and black orbs to destroy enemies on-screen. They deal more damage if you wear Fire or Dark gear when cast.

Witchdoctor

The scarier version of the Druid, the Witchdoctor summons a pair of Skeletons that fight alongside you, instead of just one ally (the Spider).

  • +30% Magic Power
  • +25% Dagger Attack Power
  • +25% Staff Attack Power
  • +6% Jump Impulse
  • +5% Speed

Special power:

  • Bone Rise
    • Two Skeletons are called up from the grave to assist you. They become stronger if you equip a Light or Dark weapon/ armor.

Elemental Masteries

Photo: Asantee Games

In Magic Rampage, each elemental weapon/ armor type offers exclusive gameplay mechanics that are intentionally kept ambiguous for you to discover. Sometimes, you need to equip the right elemental weapon/ armor to defeat certain foes, and some Dungeons were designed with specific elemental benefits in mind.

To save you from the headache, here’s a general insight into each element type in the game:

Air

Air-type items normally provide better boosts to jumping and movement speed. Apart from that, they also:

  • Protect you from spikes (no damage) set up around Dungeons
  • Improves the special powers of the Paladin and Thief

Fire

Fire weapons are useful for dealing with certain enemies, such as Zombies. Outside of combat, wearing a Fire-element armor/ ring gives you

  • Immunity to fire traps and lava damage (NOT enemy/ trap’s fireballs)
  • Complements the abilities of the Mage and High Mage

Water

In more difficult Dungeons, Water-type gear comes in handy. They:

  • Nullify spike damage
  • Let you walk through water and acidic floors without harm
  • Strengthens the Druid’s signature move

Photo: Asantee Games

Earth

Earth-element armor and rings share distinct attributes for you to beat certain levels because they:

  • Let you walk on green, glimmering platforms that spawn in tougher stages
  • Bolsters the Druid’s ultimate skill

Light

‘Holy’ weapons and armor that are imbued with the Light element can be great for solving puzzles or killing stronger foes. This is because:

  • Light weapons’ attacks penetrate yellow-hued barriers
  • Light weapons’ attacks disrupt elite enemies’ ‘rage’ shields
  • Increases the effectiveness of the Paladin, Priest, and Withdoctor’s special abilities

Dark

Dark-element gear is mostly needed for end-game Dungeons, as per the following:

  • Dark weapons break enemies’ shields quicker
  • Dark armor/ ring lets you ‘see’ Ghosts that stalk you, allowing you to attack them directly
  • Improves the damages of the Thief, Black Mage, High Mage, and Witchdoctor’s signature powers

Tips & Tricks

Photo: Asantee Games

If you’re new to Magic Rampage, there are a couple of things that aren’t explained during the tutorial. Apart from the game’s useful advice of aiming your attacks at enemies’ heads (bonus damage), here are a couple of handy tips and tricks that you might not have known about before:

Jump on enemies’ heads

As said earlier, the game doesn’t tell you that you can jump on top of enemies’ heads to avoid falling directly onto incoming attacks. You can even do this to get an elevated starting point before jumping, allowing you to reach even higher places.

Complete the Story Dungeons first

When just starting out, focus on completing all Story Chapters first. All game modes share the same inventory and equipment that you have, meaning you can be heavily handicapped when playing Competitive or Survival Dungeons without high-tier equipment on hand.

Photo: Asantee Games

Take as much time exploring Dungeons (Story)

During Story Dungeons, you have all the time in the world to explore every nook and cranny of each map. It’s recommended that you do so because some Secret Areas can be extremely hard to find, with a few only accessible off the screen!

Never sell the Jumpman Suit and SuperSonic Ring (early game)!

The Jumpman Suit and Supersonic Ring are two VERY IMPORTANT items that you mustn’t sell during the beginning stages of the game.  Both don’t provide combat improvements at all, but the Jumpman Suit boosts your jumping height by 28% (rivaling a few end-game armors), while the SuperSonic Ring accelerates your movement speed by 70%!

If you still haven’t caught on to why they’re crucial, it’s because the Jumpman Suit lets you reach exceedingly high Secret Areas that are off-screen, and the SuperSonic Ring allows you to run past enemies if you’re aiming to complete a map quickly.

Don’t destroy boxes/ crates immediately

Every time a box or crate pops up on the screen, it can be enticing to smash them on the spot. After all, it might contain a Potion or top-tier weapon for you to collect, right?

Depending on the Dungeon, specific sections of the map can only be opened by using the box/ crate earlier, allowing you to jump higher by standing on them, or use them to trigger traps/ mechanisms nearby.

Use enemies’ attacks to destroy destructible blocks

Some stages, like Bonus Levels, will strip you from your weapons, leaving you defenseless. Although you can still complete the levels by making it through to the end, certain powerful items are hidden behind destroyable blocks, such as building blocks or boxes.

To get to them, you can let enemies destroy those barriers by luring your foes into attacking them. Stand in front of those destructible blocks, and wait for an enemy to attack. Once their projectile is launched, jump away and let the telegraphed attack do its thing.

Photo: Asantee Games

Some Secret Areas are found inside flooded sections

In some Story maps, you can find yourself missing out on a few Secret Areas that are excruciatingly well-hidden. Well, have you checked underneath lava or acidic floors yet?

It sounds surprising, but you can actually dive inside lava without damaging yourself by wearing Fire-type armor. In certain circumstances, this leads to you uncovering those dreaded Secret Areas that you’ve been looking for all this time!

Change equipment frequently

In non-timed Dungeon modes (Story, Survival, etc.), you can freely change your equipment at any time without suffering penalties to your scores. Use this to your advantage because some weapons are more effective against certain enemies, while specific platforms require you to wear corresponding elemental armor for you to traverse them safely.

Conclusion
